Pentagon wants to raise internet speeds up to 2,000 gigabits per second!

Today relatively low data transmission speeds can be considered as one of the major problems of computer networks development. That is why the U.S. researchers worked at a completely new method of information transfer. They decided to use a device, which realizes optical signal and information processing. Those studies, funded by the National Science Foundation and the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), have led to the creation of polymethine, the new synthetic polymer material.

The scientists still facing mass of unsolved problems, but their work continues and soon will appear the first examples of communication devices, which will be able to achieve data transmission speeds of 100 gigabits per second (using existing communications infrastructure). However, the potential of this technology is so high that in the future it will be possible to achieve data rates of 2,000 gigabits per second.

How users can affect the Internet speed?

What factors have an influence on the speed of your Internet connection? Let’s consider those of them, which can be controlled and adjusted by the users themselves. So, the Internet speed depends on:

  • your tariff plan;
  • various viruses and other similar programs, as well as applications filtering traffic;
  • settings of your operating system and hardware (does your hardware work in a proper way? )
  • settings of your network card driver;
  • external network equipment (router, etc.);
  • the type of your connection (wireless Internet (Wi-Fi) or wired internet access);
  • quality of the “last mile” access.

So check these points trying to speed up your uploads and downloads from the Internet.

Interplanetary space vehicles will have high-speed internet

New spacecrafts will be able to send and receive data at much higher speeds. It will be sufficient for real time video broadcasting. Earlier vehicles and landers transmited data back to the Earth at speeds that were comparable to the dial-up Internet. So scientist could spend several tens of hours to receive the video from Martian vehicles, for example.

NASA representatives say that they cooperate with several telecommunications companies and the next generation of the space systems will appear in 5-6 years.

Global wireless networks want more space

Today the world community of wireless operators have faced with the serious problem. As we know the number of radio frequencies and in general wireless data transfer capabilities are limited. Unlike cable networks, the number of wireless connections can be increased only to some certain number!

We use enormous amount of gadgets that transmit data wirelessly. And sooner or later it can lead to the crucial moment when providers have not enough the world’s airspace.

Christopher Guttman-McCabe, a representative of the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA), explains that wireless data transmission is similar to highway traffic and soon we will need new “highways”.

Google becomes a broadband provider

Google is going to launch its fiber-optic experimental network. As reported in the official company blog, Google’s innovative broadband network will allow to transfer data at ultra high speed. At least 50,000 users will be connected to this network at the first stage of the project. And then this figure may be increased to 500,000 people.

This new network will open doors for the Internet applications of the next generation developed for high speed access.

Mobile broadband providers: T-Mobile + Orange = 84 %

Some top managers are under apprehension of the future trends in the market of mobile broadband services. They are anxious about possible merger of Orange and T-Mobile, considering it as birth of a new monopolist among mobile broadband providers.

Kevin Russell, 3’s Chief Executive, explains that such “alignment of forces” can concentrate 84% of the UK’s 1800Mhz radio spectrum under the direction of one company.

By the way, this year Orange was announced the best mobile broadband company in the UK. So there is no reason to be surprised that this possible merger attracted the attention of the OFT (the Office of Fair Trading).

No internet broadband — no prospects of good work

countryside-no-broadbandPeople living in countryside can find themselves in a tight corner because of lack of high-speed broadband. This fact can have a direct impact upon their chances in the jobs market.

Charlie Brooks, a famous journalist writing for The Sunday and The Daily Telegraph, counted that 10% of people in England will appear outside the walls of digital civilization, though £1 billion will be invested in rural broadband.

Absence of high-speed internet broadband can put those people at a disadvantage in the workforce market, because today more and more employers are applying home working models.

LG demonstrated a new LTE modem at CES 2010

ces-logo-2010Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (CES 2010) brings new technologies and shows that innovative gadgets leave testing laboratories and become part of our everyday life.

Let’s take as an example the new long term evolution USB modem from LG that was demonstrated at CES this year. The LTE modem allows to download files at speed of 100 Mb/s and upload information at 50 Mb/s. It means that 4G mobile communications technologies from LG bring you closer to multimedia content in the Net. Now it takes only one minute to download a new film or a music album on your notebook using mobile broadband connection.
